Harvest Haul + Uptown Farmer’s Market return!

April 13, 2022

Roof Above’s Harvest Haul program is excited to partner with the Uptown Farmers Market again for their 3rd season! Opening this weekend, April 16th, the market is a vibrant community gathering space in Uptown- 300 S. Davidson Street. Every Saturday morning from 8:00-12:30, the market hosts over 50 vendors, live music, children’s activities, a food truck and free parking.   It’s a fun place to hang out, grab a bit to eat, and purchase some NC fruits and vegetables as well as locally made artisan food.

We are excited that the Davidson Women’s Basketball team is helping both Roof Above’s Harvest Haul program and the Uptown Farmers Market on opening day- April 16th.

Vegetables are donated to Roof Above in three ways – by patrons, by the very generous Farmers, and by the Uptown Farmers Market Community Table Fund. Collectively the donors of the Uptown Farmers Market fill about 10 bins of beautiful NC grown vegetables & berries for Roof Above each week.

Each week they are fulfilling their mission:

TO ENGAGE OUR NEIGHBORS AROUND LOCALLY GROWN, FRESH FOODS TO SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS, EDUCATE ON HEALTHY EATING, AND ADDRESS FOOD INSECURITY IN OUR CHARLOTTE COMMUNITY.

In addition to donating to Roof Above, the Uptown Farmers Market runs a shuttle program, partnering with CATS Special Transport.  The handicapped-accessible shuttles pick up seniors from 4 different housing communities that are located in areas considered food deserts.   Once the seniors arrive at the market, volunteers help the seniors shop.

Collectively the donors of the Uptown Farmers Market fill about 10 bins of beautiful NC grown vegetables & berries for Roof Above each week., The market is also a SNAP retailer and participates in the double bucks program.   The market can match an EBT user up to $50.  In other words, if the shopper uses $50 of SNAP benefits, the market will match it and the shopper has $100 to spend.

(Roof Above’s Harvest Haul program makes nutritionally dense vegetables an easy option for the kitchen to serve to their guests.  Harvest Haul provides the blue donations bins for Uptown Farmers Market.  Harvest Haul Volunteers bring the blue bins to the Roof Above shelter kitchen on Saturdays at the end of the market.  Volunteers gather at Roof Above on Sunday mornings to clean and chop the donated vegetables. )

The Market & Harvest Haul are always looking for volunteers.
