Cherokee was one of the first tenants to move into Forest Point Place in the summer of 2023. When asked what it means to her to have the stability of her own home, she says, “I have something I can call mine. I have a key that I can turn myself. That means a lot.”

A home is not all that Cherokee has. She has a love of life that shows in all she does. Her smile warms a room. She’s a gifted artist, who has mastered both drawing and singing. She’s also a community builder, always joining in activities.

So back in May, when the tenant engagement team held its first Roof Above’s Got Talent event, Destiny, Cherokee’s case manager, immediately encouraged her to participate. Not only did she participate, she won!

Watch Cherokee sing “Lord, You Been Good To Me” and let yourself clap and dance along. It’s an instant joy boost!

It’s a privilege to witness someone like Cherokee share her gifts, inspiring others, and thriving at Forest Point Place, knowing she doesn’t have to worry about her housing in her golden years. She says, “I appreciate what I have. I’m grateful for the Roof Above staff. I’m just grateful. I hope that I will live my life out here until God calls me home. All I want is to be at peace and happy.”

Forest Point Place officially opened on April 1 in partnership with Mecklenburg County.
